Climbing Hualca Hualca - Mucurca - Geyser

Hualca Hualca Extinct Volcano 6 025m

This is the largest volcanoe in Colca Canyon and close to the village of Cabanaconde and Pinchollo. Hualca Hualca is a volcano complex which Sabankaya and Ampato volcanoe are part of it. This Apu (main god of locals) is a sacred mountain for the village of Cabanaconde, they consider it as a God and make ofrends and rituals all the time. You can appreacite from Cabanaconde to peaks of Hualca - Hualca. To reach to the summit is much better to stay in Cabanaconde - Pachamama Hostel and start in the following days the climb. Climbers must have a basic experience and be in good conditon, specially adapted to the altituted.

    Climbing Hualca Hualca

    1st Day

    Arequipa - Cabanaconde
    ( 6 hrs bus ride )


    Transport from Arequipa to Cabanaconde, we arrange for you the bus tickets with a local bus or tourist bus 3am pick at your hostel.

    Explore the village of Cabanaconde and its beautiful lookouts to see the depth of Colca Canyon. Visit the Viewpoint of Achachiwa, San Miguel or the Ruins of Kallimarka.

    The Village of Cabanaconde (3, 287 m) is the right place to acclimatize with the altitude.

    A night at PachamamaHome.

    2nd Day

    Cabanaconde – Mucurca Lagoon - Base Camp
    (7hrs walk) - From 3 300m (cabanaconde) to Base Camp (5 100 m)


    We de part 06:00 am from Pachamama with our 4x4 card towards Mucurca Lagoon. We will have an spectacular breakfast in the lagoon with the best view of the volcanoes. We continue 30 minute ride where we will get ready to climb. We will already have a great view of the 3 volcanoes: Hualca - Hualca, Sabankaya (active) and Ampato. On this day we climb from 4, 300m to 5 100m and it will take us aprox 6hrs walk with stops. The best view of the Sabankaya volcano will be when we will in the basecamp and also a spectacular sunset.



    3rd Day

    Base Camp - Summit - Geyser - Cabanaconde
    ( 9hrs walk)


    We will atack the summit very early, 5am, and reach on time to enjoy the view of the landscape. We will descend towards the village of Pinchollo, most of the hike is downhill after we have reached the summit. The tour will end at the Geyser of Pinchollo and our 4x4 will drive us back to Cabanaconde.

    4th Day

    Cabanaconde to Arequipa or Puno
    (7hrs Trek)


    9am we continue with the Tourist Bus Cabanaconde to Arequipa. You will the most classic views of Colca. Arrival to Aqp at 5pm.

    Or You can also continue your trip to Puno Tourist Bus Cabanaconde to Puno. You will see the most of the landscape on the way to Puno. Arrival to Puno at 7pm

    • Local Bus Aqp - Cab
      If you decide to come with a local bus you must know that these buses does not have toilet. Most locals take the bus to reach Colca Valley it can be an experience for you. The bus stops in Chivay for toilet time and continues to Cabanaconde. It also stops in all the villages. The ride is from 5 to 6 hrs. We only book the bus tickets and drop at your hotel and you must take a taxi on your own to reach the terminal. The taxi is not included in the service. Here the itinerary for the local buses


      Tourist Bus Aqp Cab at (max 22p)
      This is a minivan that comes to pick you up at your hostel. This service is a shared service and it will stop at Chivay for breakfast and at the Condor Viewpoint. Read here the itinerary for the Minivan Arequipa to Cabanaconde


      Tourist Bus Cabanaconde - Arequipa 9am (max 22p)
      On the way back from Cabanaconde will also be the minivan and it will stop in some viewpoints. Arrival to Arequipa near the main square at 5pm. Minivan Cabanaconde to Arequipa


      Tourist Bus Cabanaconde to Puno 9am
      If you continue at the end of the tour to Puno. The bus from Cabanaconde to Chivay is a minivan. it will make 2 stops to viewpoint, the village of Maca and will drop you at the office of 4m/express which you continue to Puno. The bus from Chivay to Puno is run by 4m-expressed and it also stops in some viewpoints on the way to Puno. Minivan Cabanaconde to Arequipa


      4x4 car for the 1st and 3rd Day
      We use a 4x4 car to reach Mucurca on the 2nd Day. Also the car will picked us from the Geyser of Infiernillo and drives us to Cabanaconde.

      You stay at our hostel in Cabanaconde and you will get private rooms. Our hostel has a nice terrace, good hot water system and good duvets for the cold.
